Er..scrolling Dysfunction

What is the Er..scrolling Dysfunction for hand phones. Its like when you want to do something but it wont let you and its totally out of your control and you really cant do anything about it. Its very frustrating… The phone is no more than 1.5  years, its an old phone at that age specially if you have been receiving emails/sms to upgrade you handset and avail of the new phone model… and maybe by at this phone age it will really start to show signs of ageing like the Smartphone Scrolling Dysfunction…

keep to the left!!

i can only manage to scroll vertically… no left no right but up and down scrolls only…. and that means i am limited to scroll along what is on the leftmost part of my home screen.

So thats the SMS and MMS icon below it is the Messages all my in boxes collated there below that is the Hotmail Inbox and lastly at the bottom is the Downloads folder containing all Apps that is downloaded online… but the bad part again is that after you went in to the sub folder, still it can only scroll up and down to the leftmost part of the screen, i thought if i have kept all the apps in one folder i can easily access it…well not all actually because i can only access again the leftmost part of it and that is the UberSocial fka Ubertwitter.

the hodgepodge folder

"man cant live with just twit alone"

It wasn’t the original configuration of my home screen i designed it in such a way that all of these are at the leftmost part of the screen… painstakingly.. a trial and error thing like playing a flat Rubik’s cube, adding a folder and moving icon to folders or hiding them away. See those folder icons those are empty folders icons i made to become placeholders just so i can make all those  apps/ icons be pushed to the left most part of the screen, and made it accessible vide scroll.

its so frustrating that you feel like throwing the phone off the wall… or maybe throw the phone in the floor in a public place and pick someone randomly and scream ” see what you have made me do!!!” walk slowly while talking to yourself…

oh im totally nuts now, no BBM, no facebook actually to tell you frankly you can only do so much with the Blackberry…if you know what i mean..

The 13th Station Mural

The 13th Station Mural

During weekends as family gathers around the living room, my father always asks me to sketch him; either he’s sitting or doing something else. He handed me the old sketch book he had when he was in college. The sketch book is very old, about 2 inches thick A4 size yellowing pages, and hand stitched binding. The first 20 pages are filled with his hand sketches of foot, chest, faces of different expressions, and lips in almost life like rendition. It was awesome sketches… then 5 blank pages then after that are ink doodled nonsense there written the letters d…a…v…d and few more legible words “kindergarden” that might be “Kindergarten” instead. Few checks or cross marks in succeeding 4 or 5 pages. Then a dried rose bud, pressed in between pages. Then there’s a Ninja in his super sized calves and then a portrait of Jose Rizal that might get me a death by a gun with him in Luneta for not giving him the playboy face…not so lovely face… the eff face… I cant draw a face, a nice portrait…no wonder I just love to draw Ninja figures, well that story for another blog.

….So my Dad’s sketch book is now mine, at the back pages of that sketch book was his study of the 13th station mural. There are varying sketch of different facial expressions and composition. There’s a “Pieta” pencil sketch and some drapery studies.

I think i was 6 years old when my father started this mural. Every day after work he would go back and paint this composition in our living room converted into an art studio. If my memory serves me right, he started this painting just after Christmas of ’86. Everyday the smell of linseed oil wakes me up every morning, sometimes some laughter and loud discussions from my fathers friend and some… people who appreciate arts… or should i say just somebody on the street that has got something to say about his  artwork. Some really dont know of the artistic liscense thingy and ask why this and why that.

“Why the clouds are like a cloth, it doesnt look soft.”

“Why does Jesus blood drips and still flowing when he was dead 3 days ago.”

“Why He’s wound is on the wrist and not on its palm” and so many other questions”

Of course my father likes that. He wants more of these questions; he wants more discussion about what he did.

Mural by Charles Morales Montojo

I grew up in the Old Republica Filipina Street town of Romblon, Unlike the present Republica Filipina street nowadays, it wasn’t a very busy commercial strip then, Our neighbor Jose Mallorca was an artist like my father, we use to call him Uncle Joe he was the only marble sculptor I know in Romblon back then, who works good on his proportions, and anatomy. After school I like to drop by at his studio and watch him work. It was really fun having surrounded with arts at a very young age.

It was also my awakening on mural paintings. Just like those people dropping by on our living room/dads studio i also ask my father why did he paint it that way… and maybe i being so inquisitive, and he wants me to understand mural paintings more he showed me a coffee table book of Carlos “Botong” Francisco. From then on I always look up at Botongs work and considered him as my major influences in my watercolors

the real Photoshop

the real Photoshop

Its been a while since i last hold a paint brush and splatter some paints into my painting palette… the last frustrated attempt to go back into painting was when i tried to modify a digital image, and overlay some brushstrokes using some Photoshop filters to simulate oil paintings..

Tiredness  of photography sets in one more time…

Like a love affair, similarly my relationship with painting, sculpture and other visual arts is just the same… one time we hit it off just nice and the next day we just part ways and explore whats around — being together again– is such good time.

…just like sex

painting can never get me tired, there is something in it comparable to caffeine .

i cant sleep when i started painting.. .my mind cannot consume all the thoughts inside it. I should put it in the canvass… and this is what separates my affection in painting from photography. Painting can easily put up something i wanted, something on my mind faster that 1/6000 camera shutter speed.

canvas sketch of "Pamilya"

outline with thin round brush

Bought a canvas from Art Friend  and few acrylic paints. This will be my 2nd try on using opaque paints as for so many years I’m a water colorist. Its quite difficult for me handling opaques, technique is different and water to pigment relationship is different from the water color technique I’m used to.

filling in colors on outline

Impasto… impasto.. i love impasto technique..

thickening of paint using pallete knife

After applying the base colors, filling in the outline, i find it a bit flat… the texture paste i bought is not good enough.. so its time for experimentation… this technique i learned from my Dad when i was a kid watching him paint in his studio at home.  Its like a paper mache’ technique- but instead of using glue i used the texture paste.

newspaper collage to create texture

news paper collage padding for a texture.. i love it. I might overlay another layer of it. I love textured paintings. Impasto texture..

still unfinished but looking goood

still undecided on how to do the face area… i really can do portraits on photography only..

.. still looking for inspiration.

Medium Dynamic Range?

Medium Dynamic Range?

And another word coined just for you… after having invented the word Hypocritographer. Rejoice because we have another one… its called MDR an acronym for Medium Dynamic Range image.

MDR is an acronym derived from the original acronym for superimaging ( super photo editing i may say) called HDR or High Dynamic Range aka HDRI or high Dynamic Range Imaging.  Lightroom users or anybody whose familiar with color palette can identify themselves on these things iam talking about. Like the Hue, Saturation, Luminescence. HDR is all about having the wide range of Luminisence present on a single photograph. the highs and lows of lighting, exposure and the colors have contributed to make such a wonderful photo… well dreamlike… surreal. aka FAKE.

I was a fan of this before, a simple technique can be easily available on the web if you are as slithery as the web crawlers , web bots and what not.  Try searching for the HDR technique and it will tell you to MERGE the exposures of otwo or more bracketed shots from under exposed to overexposed photo of the same frame, import it to photoshop… wishywashey.. presto HDR is ready, and so like the early years of the 70′s when hippies wear the peace… HDR Mania is born.. and like any other fad, its coming back and back once more.

so… what is MDR then??

According to latebloomer its the new fad for landscape now.. huh well why should we HDR i mean MDR the landscape… shouldn’t it that landscapes are meant to be captured in the raw? in the flesh, nude, bare nothing but the your camera and a little magic called “the way of the curves” again im not against processing pictures because i myself processes my images very heavily at times… well yeah all the time.

so… what is MDR then??

hold your horses… here it goes.

MDR is only a step lower than doing HDR and since its not HDR processing it “cant be called HDR” geddit?? its not HIGH its MEDIUM only hahahaa..

so lets get hands on…

…close your eyes and imagine that we are shooting in the great outback… the Uluru rock is so grand that it is taking your breath away… you cant even utter a word because the scene is so heavenly… relax your mind…you want to capture this scene thats so breathtaking this is the moment, lighting is perfect… colors now come into play… this is the moment you will take the picture now..so get your camera , your 5kilo DSLR in my case its my ever loved Leica Dlux4..light but nasty  set it to RAW capture… and …

oooopsss….. sice we are discussing MDR here we need the MDR technique…

okay heres the technique the shot of you life in MDR – Medium Dynamic Range its not a fake photo coz’ its not HDR baby.. so heres what you need to do…just take anything you like in the scenery make sure you have under exposed capture and one overexposed capture. Okay dont ask.. we will do the problem solving with the macbook pro later.

*snap*  *snap* *snap* *snap* ~~~macbook pro~~~

Voila.. HDR quality but its not.. its just MDR.

congratulations for having learned the secrets of better landscapes… we wish to inform you that please dont tell anybody that we just did snap anyhow and do the MDR for our beautiful landscapes… thank you.

Remember we did it in Medium not High.. so dont call it HDRed Landscape.

Hypocritographer

Hypocritographer

Today im feeding my vocabulary with new word… drum roll please…

Hypocritographer

Pronunciation: hipukrit’tugrafr

Definition: 1. [n] a person who takes photograph professionally and non- professionally, who profess that his or her images were Photoshop® free, on the justification that.. “i just move that slider further right to correct my exposure, color, etc.

2. [n] person with hypocrisy over non usage of pixel bending machine, and claiming photographic workmanship.

Hypocritographic

Pronunciation: hipukrit’tugraf’ik

Definition: 1. [adj] representing group of person with an appalling hypocrisy over abhorrence of  that pixel bending magic of Adobe ® Machines et al.

I have encountered them some many times. What you’ll hear  from them is plain justification why they have used such Pixel bending tool, and they turn to it as a last resort.  Okay that’s fine But when i look at their images.. Wow its pretty much like an Adobe Website, i thought i was redirected to the Adobe user groups gallery.

By the way all of them are RAW shooters..
